And it could come to help them in the future. If the troops know that if they are running away and not giving any threat, they won’t be attacked, but if they do offer a threat they WILL be attacked. How many do you think will want to be the first one to raise a hand against a Sister or her defenders?
Well, that depends on what their own side does to them, too, doesn’t it. We’ve seen the Corrupt leadership is quite willing to kill their own people for strategic reasons, even if they’ve done their jobs. Even a channeler. What will they do to ordinary troopers whom they suspect are slacking off on the field?
Now, I do wonder: if these troops surrendered to the defenders, would the Corrupt be able to do anything to them? They’re controlled by access to Amrit. Well, the defenders have Amrit. They live among the free sisters. So they could just let them go back to Earth through the defender-controlled portals and opt out of the whole war. They wouldn’t be immortal anymore, but they wouldn’t be slaves, either. They wouldn’t be caught between the Corrupt rock and the defenders’ hard place, forced to fight a war that’s likely to get them killed.
On the other hand, it’s possible they all have some kind of kill switch implanted. They get out of line, anywhere in Middleways, a radio signal goes out and they get acid in the bloodstream, or whatever.
You know … it took me long enough to notice, but every single member of the Corrupt we’ve seen in this chapter, and everywhere else as far as I can tell, has been white. Not an accident, I suspect. They *are* in the business of enslavement, after all, and as far as we’ve seen, they’re all from North America.
…Slavery was in use long before whites did it; Bronze-skinned in the Middle East (Mesopotamia, etc.) & even the black African natives enslaved people of their own color even more than they did with foreigners. Even today Muslims still enslave each other (from different factions) & foreigners as a matter of routine because to them, it’s legal and moral to do so!
What I don’t get, is where the corrupt get all their cool toys? I see each of the Sister’s houses have slightly different patrol boat designs, so they are probably all scavenged from the corruptporation at different times and repaired/upgraded as needed. That doesn’t explain where all the material comes from to start with, though. They have to be buying stuff from home Earth, but on that kind of scale they’d need a bunch of capital. What are they selling on Earth to get that kind of dough from?
Oh! Maybe they are selling longevity to wealthy patrons, who then have an all-expenses-paid retirement? They just hand over ownership to the Executive, then the Company skims off the interest on their investments for operating expenses. If crops can be grown and livestock tended in Middleways, that would leave a lot of disposable dollars for imports, maybe.

One one hand, I can respect the Defenders’ ethics.
Slaughtering routed troops as they are running away might be seen as dishonorable.
On the other hand, I don’t like the idea of letting an enemy come back to attack another day.
Especially if the enemy has an advantage in numbers, finances and resources.
Tough decision.(for me anyway…)
Not for me……………
I support the philosophy of “kill them all, let GOD sort them out”
